This is part of a group of paintings that focuses on the sexualization of children. The original image was taken at a children's beauty contest and I have appropriated it and altered it through medium and intent. There are a couple things at work here, other than my overall intent of dealing with children's sexuality. I am also interested in ideas of ownership. As I was working on this painting I struggled with the idea that I was using someone else's art. i am the last person who would ever support ripping. However, there is a difference between "ripping" an image and appropriating one. As the artist goes through the process of transferring the image and altering the medium, the intention changes, the mood changes. I feel this painting has been successful in that it has a much different feeling from the original painting. You can't really tell here, but the surface quality of the painting is very luscious, with multiple layers of paint built up to give the surface a luminous, smooth texture, almost like skin. It's a very touchable, sexy painting.

The original photograph was taken by Inez Van Lamsweerde and the photograph is 'Kirsten'.

Oil on masonite panel. 3 feet by 3 feet. Feb. 2005.

on another note... Looking at the original, your painting renders the emotion to be more mixed with a pained expression and the realism is beguiling

This is gorgeous... I'm battling sex slavery through an organization called Handle With Care and my heart is broken by the fact that the average age is 10 years old when girls are stripped of all basic necessity and even their own bodies and souls. absolutely cruel.. I wish I could use your portrait. This is such a beautiful piece that had so much meaning.

Wow! There is some amazing, powerful images on the Handle with Care site. I love it. Such important work. I would be very interested to get more information on how to get involved.
Thanks for finding my painting and commenting! And for letting me know about HwC. It looks like something that is right in line with a lot of my work.

I'm not sure if I've commented on this in the past, but what strikes me as the most unusual about this piece is that, without even knowing what the subject matter was meant to entail, it gave me chills. In a sort of eerie way.

Its beautifully rendered, yet always gave me this "autopsy photo" vibe. That was my initial response upon seeing it, then reading the description intensified the chills not only because it was about the sexualization of children, but because the eerie vibe it gave me was justified, despite how beautifully it is painted.

That said, I think that alone means GREAT success in what you were trying to achieve with this without even having to descibe your intentions; that it appears beautiful with a subtle unsettling aftertaste. :) Magnificently done.

The concept is fantastic and something not enough people have touched on. Great job. I love, love the lips.
coldcallidus Featured By Owner Feb 18, 2009
I wish the left and right parts of the bottom lip were a bit more colour-intense. This is a fantastic painting to work out the philosopy behind. The colours are very soft and the skin looks sensual. And the painted colour and metaphorical contrasts between the young girl and the luscious lips makes you think the artist is trying to make a point about children and sexuality, for my first instinct was to think that her eyes were hooded with desire.
But looking at it again and ignoring any conclusions I may have come to about the girl via the lips, she could just be innocently and jovially puckering up for a kiss from a parent.
I dislike trying to find meaning in abstract paintings, like several multi-coloured spatters on a canvas, so I appreciate that you've put so much meaning and controversy into this.

Sorry for the very delayed reply. Thanks for the great feedback. Art is a form of communication and a big part of that is the interpretation of the receiver/viewer. The person making the statement (the artist) can make their presentation, put the information out there, but it is up to the viewer/receiver to come to their own conclusions.
Your statements about what this painting is trying to convey are strikingly accurate: in that there is a question in the presentation. Is the girl filled with desire? Or merely looking cute for mom's camera and we read into that our own projection of desire? Are children sensual/sexual in themselves? Or have we sexualized them and the ideal of youth?

Thank you for spending the time to look and think about your reaction to this painting. Cheers.

pretty intense, strong emotive colour, with a vdrdy strong contrast. looks really good, i like the square that has been taken from the childs face, its containing and limiting, it appears to be in your face. i love the delicacy of the lips too. awesome work!

The skin around the eyes has a lot of work put into it, and of course everything else. It catches the eye, although I don't quite see the connection between your artists comment and the painting itself.
However, this is beautiful and really well done :)
wolfpooka Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2008
Thank you for looking and for the comment. It should be part of a series, at which point the concept would be more clear (in theory). But I kind of lost my motivation and haven't worked on the series in a while. Cheers. ;)

this (and number 2) look like child porn.. but the lips are fantastic!!!
and the ..... .... inhale.

very emotive...

I dunno if it's right to like it...
but maybe that the point..
... to question.

wolfpooka Featured By Owner Mar 17, 2007
i think you kind of nailed the idea right on the head. not that it is child porn, but that these are commenting on the sexualization of youth in our society. we see the qualities associated with youth in an older woman and think sexy. and so often in films with children the child is placed in a position of power with adult responsibilities. think Home Alone, Taxidriver, Pretty Baby or Blue Lagoon.
i think it's okay to like the painting...maybe not the idea behind it. ;)

Its Fantastic. I love the space above the eyes, Wow. I love how you have put the tone/colour on, it creates such intersting shapes just on the skin surface.
I love that the eyes are just slightly open as if he/she is waiting to be kissed. i think just looking at the eyes kind of gives him some misplaced age.
Two thumbs up.

The dark line going through the top lip seems to flatten it alot.

what agreat image, i feel a bit perverse viewing it so i suppose you have achieved that objective. Well done its lovely

Should you not credit the original photographers name??it would be a good reference tool in my opinion. if u dont know the artists name it's Inez Van Lamsweerde and the photograph is 'Kirsten' (1997) but i do love the way you have painted this!
wolfpooka Featured By Owner Dec 8, 2005
Thank you for the name. I got the image out of a catalog of photographs that didn't have any names of the photographers. It was really annoying. I'm thinking of taking down this image, but I'm not sure yet. I don't really feel comfortable, since the image does originally come from another artist. I think it is borderline copyright infringement. But I am also a strong believer in appropriation. That by changing medium, size and intent you can recreate an art peice and make it your own. There is a well known ("well known" I just can't remember her name) photographer who takes pictures of other artists photographs and calls them her own. She often will zero in on one part of the original photo, but it is still from the same photo. Appropriation has become her art form. Anyway, that was probably more of a responce than you wanted. I appreciate having the name of the photographer so I can give proper credit at least. Cheers.
