Artist's Comments
This is part of a group of paintings that focuses on the sexualization of children. The original image was taken at a children's beauty contest and I have appropriated it and altered it through medium and intent. There are a couple things at work here, other than my overall intent of dealing with children's sexuality. I am also interested in ideas of ownership. As I was working on this painting I struggled with the idea that I was using someone else's art. i am the last person who would ever support ripping. However, there is a difference between "ripping" an image and appropriating one. As the artist goes through the process of transferring the image and altering the medium, the intention changes, the mood changes. I feel this painting has been successful in that it has a much different feeling from the original painting. You can't really tell here, but the surface quality of the painting is very luscious, with multiple layers of paint built up to give the surface a luminous, smooth texture, almost like skin. It's a very touchable, sexy painting.
The original photograph was taken by Inez Van Lamsweerde and the photograph is 'Kirsten'. Oil on masonite panel. 3 feet by 3 feet. Feb. 2005. Daily DeviationGiven 2005-06-20=wolfpooka once again blows us away with such expressive painterly purities. Juicy Girl is a beautiful and strong work. I first saw this and was confused, was I looking at a child or an adult? I looked at the nose, it suggests a child, but those lips are terribly luscious red and adult. After I read your artists statement the entire painting took on a very complex (in a good way) meaning. In essence, it seems to portray an already thin line in regard to what's acceptable for a child... and the curves are wonderfully suggestive.
This is a fantastic job. I like this version better than the second as it doesn't look painted (so to speak).

My Prints:
So yeah. I think this is really interesting, because alot of people at first glance would prefer to think that this child is doing something like basking in the sunlight but the sexual nature is obviously present. Sexuality and children is a topic that everyone wants to stay away from, yet it exists. So I like this series alot and your guts for addressing it.
As for the painting itself, the softness amazes me. The whole thing makes me think of the word smooth, especially around the eyes. This adds to the sensuality of it, along with the choice of colors. The warm colors were a great choice.
I can't pick out anything wrong with this piece at all. Great stuff!
